To encourage the women’s political will
What has been done /the actions/
within the top-down strategy? Top-down strategy promotes gender
equity in politics through:
- Training of trainers on “Gender in Politics” for the women activists
including women’s organizations under the different political parties.
More than 90 women and 1 man have been trained.
- Publication of the Manual titled “Women’s Leadership” supported
by the Asia Foundation prior to the Election-2000
- The media campaign titled “Voters Education-2000” through the
entire country, using Mongolian TV, Radio and 6 major newspapers.
The campaign was supported by AUS AID and was held from May to June
2000.
- The media campaign titled “Challenging Social Awareness to Promote
Women’s Participation in Politics ” supported by the UNDP before
the Parliament Election- 2000
- The media campaign titled “Challenging the Social Awareness to
Promote Women’s Participation in Politics ” supported by the UNDP
before the Local Election-2000
- The insertion of the terminology “to respect gender equality”
into the Mongolian Democratic Party Bylaw. The party has now included
these valuable words.
What has been done /actions/ within
the bottom-up strategy? Bottom-up strategy is directed at women
and supports their entry into the politics.
- Signing of a Mutual Agreement with women candidates before the
Parliament and Local Election 2000 (22 candidates for Parliament
in UB and almost 50 candidates at aimag level /province/)
- Round table meetings with the political parties to lobby them
to increase the number of women candidates
- Advertising of women candidates in the major newspapers and disseminating
these through the whole country
- The appeal to vote for women candidates to all people and its
publication in newspapers, before the Election-2000
Results of the strategies and actions
- The articles on gender and women’s political
rights have been published (459000 pieces )
- The increased number of women candidates. Sixty five (65) women
candidates have been running for the Parliament election in comparison
to 28 women candidates - in 1996
- Up to 40 per cent of the total representatives of the Local Assemblies
in some aimags /province/ are women
- (1000) Pieces, Manual on Women’s Leadership, published with the
financial support of the Asia foundation
- 32 women’s NGOs joined the Coalition. The Coalition has its local
branches in 14 aimags, 1 sum and 2 districts of Ulaanbaatar.
- Research on women’s political rights conducted among 1100 people.
The research questioned the Prime-Minister, members of Parliament,
officers from the Ministries, 5 different political party’s leaders,
constituents from 65 election areas and elected women in the Parliament.
This research was financially supported by the Asia Foundation
- Increased awareness of people and political parties to support
women and vote for them, especially at the local levels
- The capacity of the Coalition has been strengthened and the skills
of officers have been promoted.
- The founders have positive attitudes to the Coalition and the
cooperation with them is very satisfactory.
