KHARA KHORUM

The resort easily accessible by air from Ulaanbaatar is situated near the ruins of Kharakhorum (Harhorin), the 13th century capital of the Mongolian Empire, and Erdene Zuu Monastery. Erdene Zuu, built in 1586 using stones from the ruins of Kharakhorum, was the first Buddhist center in Mongolia. At its height, the monastery housed 1000 monks in 100 temples. Closed and badly damaged during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, Erdene Zuu is once again functioning and open to sightseers. Also situated nearby is Orkhon Waterfall, formed by volcanic activity and earthquakes 20-30,000 years ago.
