Horse riding is an integral part of the Mongolian lifestyle and a great
way to see the country. Horses can be hired at the park by the hour or
for a full day, and overnight or large group rides can be arranged upon
request. The horses are generally quiet and suitable for all experience
levels. Guides are provided and horses are fitted with European-style
saddles.
Riding across the quiet expanse of the steppe watching raptors hunt for
small birds and rodents amongst the grass is the perfect finale to a long
summer evening.
Below is a suggested itinerary for a day ride. Hiking trails can also
be followed, or different routes can be arranged in consultation with
Hustai staff.
Horse Ride from Urtin to Ongot Graves and the Tuul River
-
The trip begins with a 7m ride along the road to the mouth of the
Urtin valley and some Neolithic graves.
-
From the graves, continue another 6km through the steppe to the
Ongot graves.
-
From these, follow the line of stones south for 2.2km until you
reach the road. Turn left and follow the road.
-
After 4km you will reach a crossroads marked by a 1m tall grave
mound. Take the road leading to the right.
-
After 1.1km, the road forks. Continue along the track to the right.
-
Ride down the road for 7.2km to the ruins of an ancient tower lying
to the south of some small hills that protrude into the valley. After
another 1.7km you will reach some gers marked by a red flag. Continue
past these gers and turn right. The final leg of your ride will bring
you to an island on the Tuul River where you can camp.
