Hustai National Park has marked hiking paths of various lengths and difficulties. While not paved or worn, the trails are marked with paint spots on prominent rocks or man-made cairns. Designed to show visitors the diversity of landscapes within the park, many of the paths can also be ridden and overnight hiking or riding tours can be arranged for groups on request.

Key to markings:
· One red spot = continue in the same direction.
· Two red spots = change direction. This is sometimes accompanied by a red arrow.
· Red cross = you have missed a change in direction and should walk back and pick up the trail.
· Cairns = these mark the trail where there are no large rocks.

Trail A - Horse & Hiking Trail Tariat (9km, total climb 300m, ± 2-hour hike)

  1. Follow the road from the Ger Camp south into the park for about 400m.

  2. Pass the gully on the right and walk to the foot of the hill that runs parallel to the road.

  3. Walk to the top of the hill and follow the ridge for 2.5km until you reach a collection of large boulders on the right. The trail meets Trail B 100m after the boulders.

  4. Continue south to reach the highest point of the trail (1,633m). At this point you can take the fork to Trail C1 or Trail C2 by walking downhill to the left to a mountain pass. Walk along Trail C1 at Point 5 or Trail C2 at Point 7.

  5. Walk to the right (northwest) for another 2.5km along the ridge of the hill.

  6. Before the ridge runs steeply down, the trail turns downhill to the right. When crossing the road, turn to the right towards the Ger Camp.

Trail B - Horse & Hiking Trail Khuiten Goon (9km, total climb 200m, ± 2-hour hike)

  1. Follow the electricity poles from the Ger Camp uphill.

  2. Just before the top of the hill, turn south and walk to a pass. Continue south to the top of the hill and follow the ridge for 3.5km. At the end of the ridge you will see the blue Research Centre in the distance with the wide Tuul River valley behind it.

  3. The ridge turns in the direction of the road. Walk to the road where you will end up at a large cairn where it is possible to continue on with Trail C1 at Point 1.

  4. You now have the choice to either take the road back to the Ger Camp or continue 100m up the road. If continuing, take a left at the fork and climb to the top of the hill where you will reach Trail A at Point 4.

Trail C1 - Hiking Trail Khushuut (Large Cairn to Moilt Camp; 15km; total climb 570m; ± 4.5-hour hike)

  1. Walk south down the road from the large cairn. Cross the electricity poles and continue on until you reach a large forested valley on your right.

  2. A grassy (rarely used) road enters the valley. Take this road, cross the lowest part of the valley, and follow it for a couple of hundred metres. The trail runs along the road until, after a curve to the left, the growth of trees in the gully has more or less ended.

  3. Climb uphill through the small gully on your right, until you reach two boulders at the top of the hill.

  4. Pass the rocks and follow the flat ground to the north for about 150m. Continue along the ridge to the left which leads to a mountain pass where you can join Trail A.

  5. At the pass, the peak of Khushuut Mountain will be in view. After a short walk downhill, on the left-hand side of the gully you will see a streambed meandering along the foot of the mountain. Continue downhill to reach the streambed.

  6. Follow the left border of the streambed uphill (the stream may be dry however). Cross the stream after a couple of hundred metres and walk along the right bank.

  7. Take a steep climb to the saddle of Khushuut Mountain (or take an unmarked shortcut along the forest). Be careful if climbing to the top.

  8. After admiring the view, backtrack for some metres to pick up the trail to the Moilt Camp. The path more or less follows the ridge of the mountain before reaching the forest.

  9. The trail through the forest runs gradually downhill and at the end turns slightly uphill to a grassy (rarely used) road bordering the forest.

  10. Follow the road uphill along and through the forest to a mountain pass.

  11. At the pass, you will see the Moilt Camp 3km in the distance. Follow the road down to the camp.

Trail C2 - Hiking Trail Khushuut (Moilt Camp to Large Cairn; 15km; total climb 570m; ± 4.5-hour hike)

  1. Start at the Moilt Camp and walk 3km north up the grassy road to a pass.

  2. After the pass, the trail runs downhill along the road through the forest. After another 20 to 30 m along the road turn right and enter the forest.

  3. The trail through the forest runs downhill at first and later gradually rises to the grassy hilltop. Follow the ridge of the hill to the saddle of Khushuut Mountain (or take a shortcut along the forest). Be careful if you want to climb to the top.

  4. After the peak, the trail runs steeply downhill for some 100m and curves to the left around a hill to a streambed.

  5. Follow the left border of the streambed (which may be dry) downhill for a while and then cross. Continue along the right border of the streambed until the trail crosses a rarely used road.

  6. Turn to the right and walk along the right-hand side of a lightly forested gully. It leads uphill to a mountain pass where Trail A can be joined.

  7. After the pass, the trail follows the ridge for some 300m after which it turns to the right to reach two boulders.

  8. Pass the rocks and walk gradually downhill to the left towards a gully with some scrub growth. Go further downhill through the gully to the road at the bottom of the valley.

  9. Follow the road to the left for about 100m, pass the bottom of the valley and walk slightly uphill to the main road.

  10. Follow the road to the left and after some 25 minutes you will arrive at a large cairn. From here you can walk further down the road to the Ger Camp or join Trail B at Point 5.

Trail E - Hiking Trail Urtin (7km, ± 1.5-hour hike)

  1. Head south from the Moilt Camp and walk along the left border of the gully for 2.5km until you reach a road crossing a wide meadow of vegetation (markings are sparse here, but the trail is easy to follow).

  2. Take the road to the right and continue along the right side of the meadow. Follow the border which runs along a streambed for a while as it curves around a hill and crosses a road.

  3. Leave the road and go uphill to a ger with a red flag (the ger may be a little behind the hill).
