Mongolian Gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) form one of Mongolia's most
spectacular natural vistas as they roam the steppes in herds of thousands.
Since 1994 a small herd of Mongolian Gazelle have chosen to incorporate the
Tuul river valley and foothills in the south of Hustai National Park into
their home range. This is the only population in the Central province. Competition
with livestock and poaching has driven them to seek shelter in the park.
The Mongolian gazelle breeds seasonally. The rutting season starts in August
as the herds gather together and continues throughout the winter until early
February. During the calving and weaning period, which commences mid-June,
the animals tend to live in smaller groups. Then a couple of months later
as the weather starts to grow colder, the gazelle gather together again and
the herd may reach several hundred individuals during the winter.
The Mongolian Gazelles main predators are wolves, lynx, dogs and man. Fox,
manul cat and eagles may take young calves.
