What is the IAMS
The First International Congress of Mongolists was held in 1959. Between the periods from the 1st to the 5th Congress of Mongolists /1959-1987/ the Permanent Committee of the International Congress of Mongolists had been functioning. Its first President was prof. B.Shirendev and the Secretary General was Dr. S.Luvsanvandan.
The 5th Congress of Mongolists held in 1987 set up the International Association for Mongol Studies and adopted its first Constitution. "The International Association for Mongol Studies (hereinafter referred to as the IAMS) shall be an international non-governmental scholarly organization uniting Mongolists and Mongolian studies centers in various countries on a voluntary basis"

The IAMS undertakes to encourage and conduct Mongol Studies, assist scholarly activities of centers of Mongol Studies and Mongolists, and promote mutual understanding and cooperation among scholars from different countries of the world. At present the number of Association's members has reached more than 300, including several affiliated institutional members such as the Mongolian National Association for Mongol Studies, the Russian Association for Mongol studies, the Japanese Association for Mongol Studies the American "Mongolia Society", the Korean Association for Mongol studies and others.
The main bodies of the IAMS are: Congress, Executive Committee, President, Secretariat and the Auditing Commision.
Mongolian, Russian and English are the official languages of the IAMS. The IAMS publishes international annual "Mongolica" and a Bulletin of News Information on Mongol Studies /twice a year/. All of them are distributed among the Association's members free of charge. They are also available by sybscription as well.
