Independent groups and
organizations have a crucial role in monitoring implementation of
the CEDAW . In those States where the CEDAW has been acceded to or
ratified, there groups can assist the government in preparing the
periodic reports to the Committee on the CEDAW required by Article
18 of the CEDAW. They can comment on or criticize the official report
or they can prepare an independent shadow report on implementation.
They can monitor the consideration of reports by the Committee on
the CEDAW . the body that monitors Convention implementation. They
can use this treaty monitoring process and particularly CEDAW’s concluding
comments in dialogue with government to promote effective implementation
of the Convention.
